Walgren Completes Design-Build
Surface Treatment Systems for
Aircraft Structural Components

Asco Aerospace Industries (world headquarters: Zaventem, Belgium; US headquarters: Stillwater, OK) is a global leader in the design and manufacture of high lift devices, mechanical assemblies and major functional components for the aerospace industry.

Asco designs and fabricates airplane parts for Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Cessna, Embraer and other aircraft manufacturers and re-tooled the Stillwater facility with a $100,000,000 investment in the 715,000 sq. ft. plant.

Walgren Company was selected to design, manufacture and install 3 automated machines for surface treatment at Stillwater, as well as material handling and automation for the final paint systems.

  • Line 1 processes steel components and provides Nital Etch and Passivation.
  • Line 2 is used for CAD plating and Chromate.
  • Line 3 processes large aluminum and titanium parts, and includes Boric Sulfuric Anodize, standard Type II Sulfuric Anodize, Titanium Etching, and Fluorescent Penetrate Inspection. It handles parts up to 20' long x 4' wide x 7'5" deep.

Virtually every major manufacturer of fixed wing, rotary wing and military aircraft uses Walgren technology for the application of performance finishes.

Walgren was also selected to build an advanced metal finishing facility at Robins AFB. Read about the project here.

Walgren Tapped to Build 3rd
Architectural Anodize Line
for Oldcastle Glass

Oldcastle is North America’s largest manufacturer of building products and materials. In 1984, Oldcastle selected Walgren to engineer and build the first modern “figure 8” system for anodizing curtainwalls, store fronts, building structures, and extruded aluminum doors.

This Type II architectural anodize line has three 12,500 amp rectifiers and 4 anodize tanks. It was installed in Oldcastle’s Terrell, Texas facility, and in 2016, passed the 32-year mark for continuous operation.

In 2000, Oldcastle commissioned a second 32’ Walgren architectural anodizing line, also for the Terrell facility. It was engineered for higher current density, which reduced anodize time and nearly doubled work flow through the system, with cycle times reduced from 40 minutes to 25 minutes.

In late 2015, Oldcastle awarded a 3rd anodize project to Walgren. The new system will have advanced control features and 22,000 amp rectifiers.

Design-Build Institute of America
Recognizes Walgren for Robins AFB Project

Project:
Advanced Metal Finish Facility -
Ground Support Equipment

Owner:
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Savannah

Design-Builder:
SAIC Constructors, LLC

Specialty Contractor:
Walgren Company

The Advanced Metal Finish Facility is a DesignBuild(sm) project for the maintenance and repair of aircraft at Robins AFB. SAIC Constructors provided design-build, general contracting, architectural and engineering services for the 114,580 sq. ft. facility, which included LEED-certifiable design and construction.

Walgren Company engineered, manufactured and installed 9 metal plating lines for the precision processing of titanium, steel, stainless steel, and aluminum components. Each line is autonomous, and has advanced automation features.

Walgren was chosen for this project based on its decades of expertise in the turnkey design and manufacture of robust, reliable metal plating lines that prioritize worker safety and good ergonomics.
